#601 - group layouts great, but is there a way to have 'read only' fields?

Open Feature created by andreskruse Verified Purchase 9 years ago

hi, not sure if this is possible. I need to restrict editing of certain fields so that only administrative staff can do it. So what I have done is to use a group layout for the 'restricted' group and simply got rid of the fields I don't want them to change. the form looks rather small now with only 3 fields that they can change. so I wonder if there is a different way, would you be able to have field level access controls with securitysuite? if not, is this a planned feature? thanks, andres

    Hello Andres,

This is only possible with some custom code right now and not with SecuritySuite. This is planned to be added as a core feature to SecuritySuite at some point. No timetable at this moment. If you need code samples on how to make a field read only based on some field value I can point you in the right direction.

I'll leave this case open to track the field level access feature.

From what I've seen about 90% or more of the use-cases that require field level access can be accomplished with custom group layouts. It looks like the group layouts work in your case, but you probably want the users to be able to see more information while on the edit view much like they see on the detail view. Is that correct?

Hi Jason, in our case we have simply done what you suggest which is to make a custom layout and just remove any field that is read-only. It looks ok and fortunately the title of the item is still being displayed above the edit so the users know which record they are editing... in fact it is better because it focuses their mind on the data they should change... so all is good.
