#3172 - Copying Select Dashboards

In Progress General Question created by jareddalrymple 6 years ago

Hi Jackal Software,

We are interested in this functionality, however we want to know if it is possible to: * Copy specific dashboards, rather than all dashboards * have the dashboards appear as additional, rather than overwriting existing dashboards

Cheers Jared Dalrymple - Evolution Marketing Services

    Hello Jared,

Thank you for the trial. As I'm sure you've found out the product doesn't have this functionality currently. I will investigate the viability of adding in this functionality and get back to you in a day or two.

Thanks again and have a great day.

    Hello,

I looked into these features and have some information for you.

Appending rather than overwriting dashboards I believe is possible. It will be a bit tricky especially if a dashboard is deployed multiple times. The same dashboard could be appended multiple times but that just may be something we have to work with. The number of dashboards is also a consideration but perhaps a simple warning would help there.

As far as copying a specific dashboard in a view (Record, Home, List) I believe is also possible but has some similar challenges. I think the best way would be a separate deployer for doing individual dashboards rather than building a template.

I have added both of these to a feature list to work on. Sorry but at this time I don't have an estimate on when they may be available. If I had to take a wild guess it likely will be a few months.

    Thanks again for the inquiry.

    Bump

This is a much needed feature for us. We have about a dozen Teams set up with some users on multiple Teams.

I'd like to be able to pick and choose which dashboard, dashlet or filter to push to specific users and have them added as options in addition to what they already have created themselves.

It would be ideal to have any deployed dashboards not completely overwrite their settings.

It would also be a benefit to be able to see the dashboards, dashlets and filters a user, team or role already has installed and be able to make changes to them individually or for all users if it's a dashboard/dashlet that has been deployed by an admin.

Hello and thanks for the feedback Chris.

I've actually gotten pretty far in the development of this feature but have a couple of sticking points that feedback would be helpful on. The first I think I have solved which is where to put the new dashlet.

I've worked out ways to give the option to add to the bottom or top of a given LIst, Record, or Home dashlet but I think just putting at the bottom will be best because for Home dashlets you must add an entire row and that may look odd with one dashlet in a row on the Home.

The second issue is we can have multiple dashboards for List, Record, and Home locations and deciding which to push it to without overwhelming decision trees has been a challenge. A quick solution would be to just either append the oldest or most recently created dashboard but if a user wasn't using that one they may not know the new dashlet is there.

Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I am also working on the ability to lock a template so even if the target user changes their dashboards then that won't impact what the template copies.

This is great news, thanks for such a quick reply!

I think for Home, deploying the entire dashboard would work better than trying to deploy individual Dashlets. I could see where that could get a little hairy. For my purposes, I'd want to push out an entire Dashboard and simply have it be added to the list of dropdown items from the cube in the upper left.

As for second issue - I think even with the ability to push (or overwrite or even delete) these dashboards and dashlets to users is great, but communication is still necessary. In my role, it's vital that I communicate any changes to my team so they are aware of the new features. Any time I deploy a new module or update a drop down I have to be able to communicate it to all affected users. A quick email usually works for me, or I'll jump into one of their team meetings if it requires a little training.

I could see where this might be problematic for admins managing hundreds or thousands of users. In that case what if there was a notification that popped up to notify users that there were new options available for them in the dashboard dropdowns?

We just recently purchased this app from you. We also would like the following, some of which have already been listed.

    1. The ability to deploy one or more dashboards from within your account, without deploying them all. (Instead of selecting home, select the individual home dashboards that you want to deploy)
    2. Have those dashboards only append to a users existing dashboards, so they don't lose existing personalized dashboards created by them before and after a deployment has been completed.
    3. The ability for the sharer (admin) of a dashboard to make changes to the dashboard after it had been deployed and easily update all deployed dashboards to match their new changes.

Look forward to seeing the changes / upgrades you come up with. Matt
